I tested different metallic objects first, knowing I wanted initially to focus on the metallic sounds of the pipe being ripped off, the barrel being knocked over, running on the metal grating and the door being closed. I favoured materials that you can see in the video such as the shovel or the bin that had a clear sustained resonance when \u2018bowed\u2019 with the copper pipes or other small pieces of metal.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For that\u00a0initial\u00a0pipe being ripped\u00a0off the wall\u00a0and then pried into the door, I landed on using a mixture of this bin lid and shovel being\u00a0hit and\u00a0scraped\u00a0with recordings of\u00a0my\u00a0old shed\u00a0door. This door was scraping and creaking across the stone floor beneath\u00a0it\u00a0and\u00a0which helped\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I was first considering\u00a0to recreate\u00a0the sound in this\u00a0cinematic, I knew that the acid spitting shotgun was going to be\u00a0a real challenge\u00a0to get right.\u00a0I found this video:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_J56n496u6k&amp;t=521s\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0How I Design Awesome Gun Sounds\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by Matt Gault to be\u00a0really useful\u00a0in detailing the sequence of events that take place sonically when a gun is\u00a0fired.\u00a0I wanted this weapon to have this make-shift\u00a0steampunk vibe but also have this brutish force to it\u00a0as well as\u00a0its\u00a0steaming\u00a0acid\u00a0at the tail end.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u00a0found that flicking the\u00a0toaster\u00a0springs\u00a0worked well for the cocking back of the charging arm\u00a0and I was also\u00a0able to utilise\u00a0the more aggressive handling\u00a0of the toaster\u00a0for the hammer\u00a0striking the shell\u00a0which\u00a0required\u00a0a much sharper transient. Then\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0explosion which I ended up\u00a0relying\u00a0mostly\u00a0on\u00a0a library\u00a0recording which\u00a0I\u00a0also\u00a0layered with\u00a0some extra low-end\u00a0impact\u00a0taken from me rustling my jacket\u00a0that you can see later in the video\u00a0and some wood snapping\u00a0for\u00a0some extra crunch\u00a0of the door. I also added in his clothing movement<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">\u00a0by rustling my jacket<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">\u00a0as well as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">recording shaking nails and other small metal parts in a towel to create the effect of some metallic hardware\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">on his clothing. I think these clothing movements that I ended up doing could\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">have<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">\u00a0had more variation and emphasising as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">we\u2019re<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">\u00a0looking through his perspective<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27414652 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW27414652 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the final part of the cinematic we get interactions with this door on this metal pod.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0deep metal scraping noise that carried the weight of this door\u00a0being closed\u00a0which I managed to achieve with the bin scraping with the metal stand.\u00a0This was good because of the sharp edge of the metal stand rubbed\u00a0harshly\u00a0against this bin which was similar enough in\u00a0shape so when I pitched it down it worked to fit the scale of the pod which this sound would be reverberating\u00a0inside of.\u00a0This door is then ripped open\u00a0with these big sharp claws.\u00a0This is when I\u00a0came up with\u00a0the idea to use a bread knife scraping against this small brass hand shovel. This\u00a0recording made up for the high frequency content of the\u00a0rip,\u00a0but I knew I needed more weight\u00a0behind it,\u00a0so I had to go back and record sharper a\u00a0quicker scrapes of that same bin\u00a0with my hand inside to act as a mute as the so it wouldn\u2019t resonate for nearly as long.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In conclusion, this project has provided me with a deeper understanding of both the technical and creative aspects of foley production within a cinematic context. This project also made clear how small adjustments in timing, layering, and material choice had a significant impact on how convincing\u00a0the final result\u00a0felt. I also became more confident in experimenting with unconventional sound sources, which proved essential in creating\u00a0my\u00a0material. Additionally, this project reinforced the value of combining original recordings with professional sound libraries.
